- Put yourself first. Can you babysit while I further my career, have a ball, enjoy time alone with partner etc. etc. etc.? You can simply reply – Sorry dear, I’m going up that intriguing trail, putting up a stall at the farmer’s market, getting a massage or setting off on a cruise etc. etc. etc. All the things you would love to do and haven’t because of that heavy sense of duty, obligation, responsibility. Which is not to say that you won’t help out occasionally because you would love to.
- Love yourself. When we don’t really feel like we are enough, worthy of love, deserving of consideration, we let others ride roughshod over us. It’s that underlying need for approval that has us saying ‘yes’ when we’d rather say ‘no’. The process of loving yourself, warts and all, is really the process of becoming empowered. Empowered enough to finally have no need for the approval of another, you sooooo approve of yourself.
- Don’t allow dominance. Easier said than done for some of us who have a really dominant person in our lives who knows what’s best for us, or so they lead us to believe and accept. When you finally wake up, start by making smaller, almost inconsequential decisions for yourself that will give you more and more courage to step out from under that domination. You will, of course, be prepared for the fireworks, but it’s so worth it to think and choose for yourself that you will stand your ground.
- Be authentic. Every time you say ‘yes’ when you really want to say ‘no’ is one more occasion when you are not being true to yourself as well as compounding all the emotions of anger, resentment, frustration and not feeling good enough within you. To be authentic, you first have to discover who you really are beneath all the labels people have stamped you with throughout your life. It starts with – Do I really like doing this? Does it give me peace, joy, satisfaction? Your emotions will lead you to your authentic self.

On the conscious journey, anger is often a component of our being that we struggle with. We think of it as ‘bad’, we’re ashamed of it and we have great judgment about it. Plus, all the people you love and who aren’t on the conscious journey are quick to point out that you shouldn’t be losing your cool that readily if you are on a spiritual path. That just emphasizes what you already believe. Often, some of us will mask our anger, but it’s there within us wreaking havoc within, physically as well as emotionally.
A well-known enlightened master of our time transitioned from a lifetime in the fifth level of consciousness. He went to a golden plane of existence that was in consonance with his state of consciousness, where he existed for a long, long ‘time’ because that existence was so blissful and he really had no desire to go anywhere else. Then came a day when he remembered his wife on the earth plane and wished to be with her again. Back to earth he came as his beloved wife’s grandson. He went on to attain the highest level of consciousness on earth (the 6th level) and spent that lifetime teaching his way, or path, to enlightenment.

anywhere. He coped by shutting down his emotions. As he went through life, he wanted all the things that he saw others having – a family, a home, friends – but he had no clue how to get them. Yet he knew he was missing something. Others in similar situations had moved on, why couldn’t he? Till he literally heard a voice in his head say, “Pay attention to your emotions.” Relating this story still gives him goose bumps today because it was the start of an extraordinary journey into the world of emotions and their infinite power to transform life.
In all the illusions we exist – illusion of this physical plane, this body, time, distance, what is real is our emotions. They are what keep memories and thoughts alive in us.
Many are the people who spend years in search of the ultimate answer to raising one’s consciousness. Many want to move away from the troubling, destructive emotions of anger, dislike and guilt. They want to be loving and compassionate, yet know that they cannot fake these qualities. It’s around this time that some of them give up on their desire for a higher state of consciousness. They’ve tried everything, followed all the rules, techniques and rituals and it’s made little difference. There are all those family members and friends who will say with a mixture of astonishment and pity – you’ve been on the spiritual path for so many years, yet you lose your cool so fast!
We are all geniuses, potentially. Men like Einstein, Tesla and some would say, Elon Musk may have garnered all the attention for their genius, but are we any less in potential? That dratted word again, but really, it’s the difference between those who utilize that potential and those that don’t.
There’s another truly amazing by-product of the open mind and allowing, perhaps even actively searching for new, exhilarating thoughts. You raise your consciousness. Leaving the confines of limited, same old, well-used all-over-the-world thoughts is not only a fulfilling adventure but a great impetus to our slow moving frequency bands. These bands not only get that much-needed whirl but new life courses through our bodies. And this bear repeating, our consciousness raises.
